Coming up this weekend - In 1881, Lieutenant Adolphus W. Greely (pictured here) and 24 of his men set out to explore the northernmost polar Arctic. But when no ship returned to their camp with fresh supplies and food two years in a row, the men - abandoned and starving - had no other option but to head south to find help. This week - We spoke with history expert and University of Illinois professor, Craig Koslofsky about the origins of tattooing, branding and scarification. Many early European settlers returned from Jerusalem in the 16th century with intricate religious tattoos like a Jerusalem cross. Those doing the tattoo would "sanitize" the area with wine and get to work, manually breaking the skin with a needle or other sharp object.
