Culture Crash: Remaking The Justice League

Almost immediately, a contingent of fans began protesting the movie with the hashtag #ReleaseTheSynderCut urging WB to allow Zack Snyder to release the film as he intended. After years of posts, tweets, and other desperate pleas, WB called Uncle. As reported in the Hollywood Reporter, Snyder will be given between $30 million and $40 million to complete his version, which is slated to premiere on HBO Max, the company’s new streaming service, in 2021.

In November 2017, Warner Brothers released Justice League, which was intended to rival Marvel’s Avengers movie, but instead becoming a box office disappointment. In part, the movie suffered from a lack of cohesion. Zack Snyder, the film’s original director, was forced to depart the project following a family tragedy and Joss Whedon stepped in to finish the project. However, the directors took somewhat different approaches to the material, so the movie plays like two different movies smashed together.

On one hand, online commenters and industry insiders alike have taken issue with the decision, as it seemingly rewards fans for spending years spamming posts and encourages similar temper tantrums in the future. However, I fall in the contingent that sees the situation a bit differently. With this proliferation of streaming channels – Warners’ HBO Max, along with Apple TV+, Disney+, Hulu, Netflix and all the others, these massive corporations should be looking for ways to please their fans. These companies are spending billions of dollars on new projects, so why not spend some of that money on something that will attract new subscribers? Additionally, the announcement comes amid the COViD-19 pandemic, when production houses are in a standstill. If this project gives employees something new work on, then great.
