75 Years After WWII: The Men of the 44th Bomb Group

You are here: Home / Archive / Feature Stories / 75 Years After WWII: The Men of the 44th Bomb Group
Published: May 24, 2020 by VPR Producer

The month of May 2020 celebrates Memorial Day and also marks the 75th anniversary of the end of World War II in Europe. Memorial Day honors the veterans that served and lost their lives protecting the country, including the members of the U.S. Air Force 44th Bomb Group during World War II. The war united veterans over their shared experience and connected others who had similar stories of relatives that served.

Mara Truslow is a management consultant and applied researcher whose grandfather, Wallace Truslow, served with the U.S. Air Force 44th Bomb Group. Truslow wanted to bring the stories of those like her grandfather to light and to connect with others who had relatives that fought in World War II. To do so, Truslow used data mining and her analytical skills to tell the narrative of the men that served in the 44th Bomb Group through a comprehensive online database. The database included information about each crew member and the details of each mission in remembrance of their stories and sacrifice.

Truslow’s grandfather, like many others, experienced Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) from living with the trauma of the war. Because Wallace did not talk about his PTSD or his time in the war, Truslow hopes that by connecting with other families of veterans the history of her grandfather and the 44th Bomb Group can be remembered.
