Culture Crash: The Evolution of Harry Styles

You are here: Home / Archive / Culture Crash / Culture Crash: The Evolution of Harry Styles
Published: June 19, 2022 by VPR Producer

Welcome to Culture Crash, where we examine American culture – what’s new and old in entertainment…

In just over 10 years, Harry Styles has gone from an unknown teen trying out for The X Factor in the UK to a household name and a global superstar. After spending the better part of the 2010s in One Direction, Styles went solo in 2017, which also happened to be the year he made his feature film acting debut in Christopher Nolan’s WWII thriller Dunkirk.

He has spent the years since continuing to make solo music and acting, and now commands arenas and red carpets as one of the most famous people in the world. In fact, Baz Luhrmann, the director of Moulin Rouge and more said he didn’t cast Styles as Elvis Presley in his film Elvis because Styles is already an icon in his own right.

All of this to say, Styles’ latest album, “Harry’s House” was one of the most anticipated albums of the year… and it totally delivered. The album starts out on a joyous note with the anthemic “Music For a Sushi Restaurant” but quickly settles into a more contemplative mood. Standout tracks “As It Was,” “Little Freak,” and “Keep Driving” are all full of lyrics in which Styles is asking himself the big questions, thinking of past relationships, and reveling in his current relationship. One thing that can happen with these huge celebrities who grow up in the spotlight is they can find fame to be suffocating. Styles, it appears, has been able to navigate the waters of fame well and seems to be thriving both personally and professionally.

“Harry’s House” is one of the albums of the year, and millions of fans worldwide are waiting with baited breath for whatever comes next.

“Harry’s House” is available now.

I’m Evan Rook.
