Welcome to Culture Crash, where we examine American culture – what’s new and old in entertainment…
In 2022, the box office showed signs of life post-pandemic, though the movie industry does seem forever changed. Still, 2023 now presents a huge opportunity for movie studios and platforms to push for an even greater return to normalcy. The goal for this year would be to motivate audiences to drive to their local theater for something besides Top Gun, superheroes, and Avatar. Luckily, 2023 has a lot to be excited for.
In February, M. Night Shyamalan will return to theaters with Knock at the Cabin, an adaptation of the 2018 novel The Cabin at the End of the World. Just a week later, the Magic Mike saga will come to an end with Magic Mike’s Last Dance, which is being billed as Channing Tatum’s final film in the role.
In March, the Rocky franchise and the Scream franchise will release new movies into the wild. I’m especially excited to see star Michael B. Jordan make his directorial debut with Creed 3.
But for me, the movie year will likely peak on July 21, when two of my favorite filmmakers will release their latest films when Christopher Nolan debuts his film Oppenheimer about the father of the atomic bomb and Greta Gerwig will unveil her movie Barbie, which is, yes, based on the toy. Oppenheimer and Barbie have been competing for internet attention for months. Oppenheimer’s cast includes Cillian Murphy, Emily Blunt, Matt Damon, Robert Downey Jr, Florence Pugh, while Barbie’s cast features Margot Robbie, Ryan Gosling, Simu Liu, Kate McKinnon, and Will Farrell. If that can’t get people to the theaters, I don’t know what could.
I’m Evan Rook.
