Why CPR Training Can’t Wait Until The Emergency

You are here: Home / Archive / Feature Stories / Why CPR Training Can’t Wait Until The Emergency
Published: August 2, 2026 by VPR Producer

Cardiac arrest often happens at home. That means a partner or family member is often the closest person who needs to jump into action and react. We look at what effective CPR requires, why people hesitate and how a small amount of training – whether it’s 15 minutes or a couple hours – can be the difference between life and death in a high-pressure moment.

Guest:

  • Kiera Newbury, licensed emergency medical technician, Massachusetts, co-author of The Saved Effect: True Stories of Lives Reclaimed by People Who Were Willing to Act

Emergency medicine has been a part of Newbury’s life from an early age. Her dad is a veteran firefighter and paramedic, and by eight years old, Newbury was already certified in CPR. But doing chest compressions on a mannequin is far different than the real thing.
