In Philadelphia, the Academy Of Natural Sciences announced its closing its public museum permanently at the end of this month due to budget cuts. It first opened in 1828 and is the country’s oldest natural science research institution and museum.
Before this year, the organization had reduced its operating hours and staff in order to trim costs, however these cuts weren’t enough. the academy said that federal budget cuts and drops in overall visitors were two big drivers that led to this decision.
Sadly, this closure in Philadelphia is part of a broader issue. Many museums across the country are struggling to keep afloat as operating costs rise and funding from both government and private donors fall.
A 2025 survey of more than five hundred museum directors by the American Alliance Of Museums found that 55 percent were still seeing fewer visitors than in 2019. More so, about a third had also lost government grants or contracts following federal changes under the trump administration. two-thirds of these museums said that they’re still struggling to recoup this lost funding.
This matters because most museums don’t survive on ticket sales alone. It’s a combination of admissions, memberships, donors, foundations and government grants. When attendance is down, costs are up and grant money disappears, there’s not a ton of other options to fall back on.
As a society, museums are important because they support school programs and independent learning at any age. they also help preserve artifacts and scientific collections and help bring awareness to conservation and preservation efforts.
