The Long Road From Wildcat To House Cat

You are here: Home / Archive / Feature Stories / The Long Road From Wildcat To House Cat
Published: September 27, 2026 by VPR Producer

Cats have a reputation for being moody, mysterious and nearly impossible to train. But there’s a lot more behind their behavior. This week, we explore what makes cats so unique and how thousands of years alongside humans shaped the furry felines we know today.

Guest Information:

  • Jonathon Losos, evolutionary biologist, associate professor, biology, Washington University in St. Louis, author, The Cat’s Meow: How Cats Evolved from the Savanna to Your Sofa.

Jonathan Losos is an evolutionary biologist and a professor at Washington University in St. Louis. He’s spent decades studying how cats became the animals we know today.

One difference is how domestic cats meow much more than their wild relatives.
