Billions Of Galaxies, A New Generation: Who Gets To Solve The Universe?

You are here: Home / Archive / Feature Stories / Billions Of Galaxies, A New Generation: Who Gets To Solve The Universe?
Published: October 11, 2026 by VPR Producer

As NASA looks deeper into dark matter and dark energy, astrophysicist Sarafina El-Badry Nance is asking a different question: who gets the chance to help solve those mysteries? She explains why broader access, mentorship and representation in astrophysics matter if the field wants to reach its full potential.

Guest Information:

  • Sarafina El-Badry Nance, astrophysicist, author, Starstruck: A Memoir of Astrophysics and Finding Light in the Dark.

Once operational, its field of view will be at least a hundred times larger than the Hubble telescope. If it works as designed, Roman could help explain how dark matter shapes the universe and why its expansion is speeding up.

The future of astrophysics isn’t just about better telescopes, but who gets the chance to manage them. Plenty of kids and teens are fascinated by space, but many rule themselves out because they think they’re not smart enough.
