Welcome to Culture Crash, where we examine American culture – what’s new and old in entertainment…
With Memorial Day weekend comes the start of a new summer… and with a new summer comes a new Summer Blockbuster season. And this year promises to be a doozy. Already this year, Super Mario Bros. and Guardians of the Galaxy 3 have already lit up the box office, but now comes the even bigger guns.
On June 2, Miles Morales swings back into action in Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse, a sequel to the beloved animated film Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, then comes a new Transformers movie followed by Elemental, the latest original movie from Pixar. June will also see the release of The Flash, Wes Anderson’s new movie Asteroid City, and a new Indiana Jones movie.
But all of that is just an appetizer for the monster month of July. On July 12, last year’s box office king Tom Cruise returns as Ethan Hunt in Mission Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One, and July 21 is the double-header day so many cinefiles have been looking forward to, as Christopher Nolan’s historical epic Oppenheimer will hit theaters the same day as Greta Gerwig’s Barbie movie.
And finally, August will send the summer off with a Gran Turismo car movie, a Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles animated adventure, and a foul-mouthed animal comedy with a voice cast that includes Will Ferrell and Jamie Foxx.
I’m Evan Rook.
