Welcome to Culture Crash, where we examine American culture – what’s new and old in entertainment…
When Breaking Bad went off the air back in 2013, it was considered by many one of the best TV shows ever – up there with even the wire and mad men. It made Bryan Cranston and Aaron Paul staples in American pop culture and secured a whole bag of Emmy awards… so when they announced a prequel series all about Bob Odenkirk’s smarmy lawyer Saul Goodman, fans were split.
On the one hand, there was skepticism, because could a new series possibly tarnish the memory of Breaking Bad’s excellence? But on the other hand, more is more, and more Breaking Bad-set Albuquerque held a lot of promise.
Personally, I had some concerns about a series with a predetermined ending since it was a prequel. That was unfounded and it turns out the excitement was more justified. In its first 5 seasons, Better Call Saul has hit highs reminiscent of Breaking Bad at its best.
While it is a bit slower paced than Breaking Bad, Better Call Saul pays off that required patience with wonderful character study and features at two stunning performances at its heart thanks to Odenkirk as well as co-star Rhea Seehorn, who plays Kim Wexler, who is a new character for this series and is also a total fan-favorite.
The final season of Saul is set to premiere April 18, and the excitement is mounting once again. Now is the time to catch up and be there for every moment of Better Call Saul’s final episodes.
I’m Evan Rook.
