Culture Crash: Drama, High Stakes & Multi-Million Dollar Gambles: Binging “Industry”

You are here: Home / Archive / Culture Crash / Culture Crash: Drama, High Stakes & Multi-Million Dollar Gambles: Binging “Industry”
Published: August 28, 2024 by VPR Producer

Welcome to Culture Crash, where we examine American culture – what’s new and old in entertainment…

Appointment TV on HBO Sunday nights is a time-honored tradition. In the past, shows like The Sopranos, Game of Thrones, and Succession have helped us all stave off those Sunday scaries for just another hour week after week. Now, HBO’s third season of Industry is here to take the baton and bridge the Sunday gap into NFL season.

Industry is a soapy, steamy show full of smart 20-somethings who speak in unintelligible financial jargon with various degrees of British accents and I really couldn’t love it more. In the middle of it all is Harper Stern, an American who moves to London to chase big dreams of success despite the fact that she’s lying about her undergraduate degree. Harper’s friend Gus, her mentor Eric, her frenemy Yasmin, and Yasmin’s sorta kinda situationship Robert round out the main cast for a show that ***always has me on the edge of my seat, even if the stakes of big stock market buys, sells, and shorts can often go over my head.

The show, which runs for 8 episodes per season, has the perfect amount of backlogged episodes for new fans to jump in with a binge, and this third season seems very promising thanks in part to the addition of Kit Harrington, formerly known as Jon Stark, to the cast.

Beyond just the simple delights of seeing proficient young professionals make a mess of their lives at work and at home in a well-produced, slick package, Industry really does have something to say about the cost of success, the meaning of ambition, and how young people are trying to make a way for themselves in the modern world. What I’m saying is Industry is a smart and enthralling way to wind down on a Sunday evening.

Industry airs on HBO and streams on Max.
