Culture Crash: Why “Industry” Is HBO’s Quiet Hit

You are here: Home / Archive / Culture Crash / Culture Crash: Why “Industry” Is HBO’s Quiet Hit
Published: February 28, 2026 by VPR Producer

Welcome to Culture Crash, where we examine American culture – what’s new and old in entertainment…

For decades, HBO has been the prestige TV destination. With shows like The Sopranos, The Wire, and Game of Thrones to its credit, HBO is known for launching some of the most successful shows in the history of the medium.

In late 2020, the network premiered a co-production with the BBC called Industry. The show centers on a group of young, ambitious investment banking interns who are willing to sleep, scrap, and claw their way to the top of the financial mountain, and the whole thing is set to an intoxicating soundtrack of synth beats. Industry immediately gained a cult following, but like everything in 2020, it was hard to know just how much staying power the show would really have.

Through four seasons now, Industry has officially turned into a genuinely great HBO show that’s launched several exciting careers, including that of Alien: Romulus star David Jonsson and Black Bag star Marissa Abela. With just the right mix of soapy drama and prescient commentary on wealth and class disparities in the 2020s, Industry is one of the best shows currently on the air.

If you loved Succession and haven’t checked out Industry, you really could be missing out on your next favorite show. For years now, Industry has continuously delivered stellar performances, anxiety-fueled climaxes, and jaw-dropping betrayals. Well-written enough to be savored week-to-week and compact enough to take down in one big binge, Industry is an underseen gem just sitting on HBO Max, waiting to be watched. And if you don’t understand all the finance jargon, that’s okay, because I’m pretty sure trying to follow along is half the fun.
