The Places We Go When We Press Play: Why Music Breaks Through

You are here: Home / Archive / Feature Stories / The Places We Go When We Press Play: Why Music Breaks Through
Published: September 20, 2026 by VPR Producer

Why does a song from decades ago bring back details you thought you’d forgotten? Princeton researcher Elizabeth Margulis looks at what happens when music sends our minds wandering, why certain songs become tied to specific chapters of our lives and what we lose when listening to music takes a backseat.

Guest Information:

  • Elizabeth Margulis, professor, director, Music Cognition Lab, Princeton University, author, Transported: The Everyday Magic of Musical Daydreams.

Why are some songs able to tug at your heart or put you in a better mood? The opening starts playing and your instantly back in your childhood kitchen, the backseat of a friend’s car or thinking about a person that you’ve forgotten about for years.

Why does music affect us so much? And why can a piece of sound become so tightly attached to a period of our lives? Elizabeth Margulis shares her own listening experience that brings her back to a specific time.
