What We Remember vs. What We Bury

You are here: Home / Archive / Feature Stories / What We Remember vs. What We Bury
Published: November 8, 2026 by VPR Producer

Some monuments tower over cities, while others are tucked away or have been forgotten entirely. Author Howard Mansfield takes us from grand war memorials to symbolic, more understated designs that feel disconnected in today’s world. In this story, we explore how the monuments we see shape our understanding of history and whose stories get remembered.

Guest Information:

  • Howard Mansfield, historical writer, author, Invisible Monuments: Tribute, Memory & the Summoning of the Past.

The Bunker Hill monument was built in 1843 and marks the site of one of the first battles of the American Revolution between British and colonial forces. However, today, the meaning behind its design hasn’t aged as well as the stone itself.

Another monument that caught his attention sits in Chicago’s Grant Park. Unveiled in 1897, the John Alexander Logan monument features a Civil War general on horseback sitting high above the people passing by.
