Welcome to Culture Crash, where we examine American culture – what’s new and old in entertainment…
By now, you’ve heard of Taylor Swift’s Eras Tour. Last year, the demand for Swift’s initial U.S. run was so high that congress investigated how Ticketmaster handled that initial onsale. Then, in March, the tour started and for months dominated TikTok live streams and local news segments across the country as Swift slowly lurched toward your favorite city. And now, the pop star has announced that she will be bringing the Eras Tour to movie theaters on October 13. And yes, the AMC website did struggle to manage the demand for ticket purchases and had to institute a queue page as Swifties went en masse to their website for tickets.
Like everything Taylor Swift touches these days, the Eras Tour is pure gold. The merch stands open days before her shows begin in a city to meet the demand, fans have made untold friendship bracelets to exchange outside of the tour, and though the initial U.S. leg has concluded, Swift has international dates and a second U.S. leg that will take the tour all the way into November 2024.. With the potential for more dates to come at a later date. So what’s the big deal? Well, the tour sees Swift perform songs from every album cycle of her career in a three-hour set. That means fans can hear 2000s-era hits like You Belong With Me, 2010s successes like Shake it Off, and 2020s singles like Cardigan or Anti-Hero… and the true lesson of it all is that people really, really, really love Taylor Swift.
Coming off the heels of the COVID pandemic, when touring came to a complete halt, demand for live music seems to be at an all time high. TIME Magazine estimated the Eras tour will generate almost $5 billion in consumer spending in the U.S. alone by the time all is said and done, and that estimate came before Swift announced she’d be taking the show to movie theaters across the country. At a time when so many movie releases and brand launches struggle to gain footholds in consumer minds, Taylor Swift and her Eras tour have conquered the entire mountain all by themselves.
The Eras Tour film will hit theaters October 13, and Swift will return for more live U.S. dates next year… if you can somehow manage to get tickets.
