When The Sickest Person Runs The Show

You are here: Home / Archive / Feature Stories / When The Sickest Person Runs The Show
Published: November 1, 2026 by VPR Producer

When you’re too sick to get out of bed, how are you supposed to coordinate care across 30 different doctors? Samantha Sloves spent years searching for answers to an invisible illness, facing debilitating symptoms that others couldn’t see and doctors sometimes questioned. Her story reveals a frustrating reality for many chronically ill patients: the people who need the most help are often left to navigate the healthcare system on their own.

Guest Information:

  • Samantha Sloves, patient & founder, My Lyme Coach

By the time Samantha Sloves was fifteen, she had seen more than thirty doctors hoping to find an answer and feel better. Each time, she was poked and prodded, underwent more tests and received varying diagnoses and medications. In one instance, she received two completely different answers from two doctors at the same practice.

Before getting sick, Sloves loved playing tennis, singing, going to the movies and hanging out with her friends. But within weeks of her first symptoms, even walking the short distance from her bedroom to the bathroom became a struggle.
