Construction has a hiring problem and part of it may be self-inflicted. The industry needs tens of thousands of new workers while continuing to overlook people who were never welcomed or shown a clear way in.

In a 2025 survey from the Associated General Contractors of America, ninety-two percent of firms trying to hire said they’ve been having trouble finding reliable, qualified workers. One huge issue is that the industry has kept recruiting from the same pool of people, even as that pool has continued to shrink.
Jocelyn Lipscomb became a carpenter through a less traditional route. Initially, she studied Kinesiology at Indiana University, but after graduation, realized it wasn’t the right career path for her.
